The latest trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated (and delayed) adaptation of The Great Gatsby was released this week, and it spotlights one of the traditional selling points of any Luhrmann joint: the soundtrack. In addition to new music from Lana Del Rey (whom Louis Peitzman points out is quite well-suited to the source material) and Florence + The Machine, the trailer also opens with a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” recorded for the film by Beyoncé and André 3000. Interesting, no? The song was previously covered as a tribute to Winehouse by her idol Ronnie Spector, so we’ll have to see how Queen B’s version shapes up in comparison. It’s difficult to imagine anyone having a more innate understanding of Winehouse than Spector, but Beyoncé thrives on spanking naysayers. And while being spanked by Beyoncé would surely make for a great story, it’s also the kind of thing you might not survive if she starts hulking out.
